Good morning from beautiful Palm
Springs. I am Anthony Mejia, City Clerk of Palm Springs, and incoming
President for the City Clerks Association of California. I want to take
this opportunity to thank outgoing President Patrice Olds and her Board
of Directors for their tireless service to the members and for setting
up the incoming Board of Directors for success. It is because of her
vision, we are moving forward with Phase Two of the three-year Strategic
Plan, focused on Governance, Education, and Communications. And thank
you to nearly 400 members that responded to our survey. We now have
reliable data to guide our actions as we work to streamline our
association and further enhance the programs and services offered to our
members
CCAC Goal Setting: On
Friday and Saturday, October 9 and 10, 2020, the Board met for its
first virtual Goal Setting session. Retired City Clerk Joann Tilton
facilitated this year's session, and it is her wisdom and institutional
knowledge that helped guide us as we developed Action Plans for our
future. Adam Probolsky, of Probolsky Research, reviewed the survey
results and participate in a Q/A with the Board. I encourage everyone to
review the survey results at https://tinyurl.com/ccacsurvey2020.
And of course, once completed, we will share the new Action Plans with
the entire membership, and we may even have a few follow-up surveys in
the coming months.
IIMC Region IX Director:
On October 26, 2020, the new Board will hold its first meeting to
consider supporting the nomination of Ruth Post for IIMC Region IX
Director. Ruth is a Past President of the Oregon Association of
Municipal Recorders and has served on many State and IIMC committees
over the past 18 years. For those of you wondering why CCAC Board would
consider endorsing another state's nominee for Region 9 Director, it was
in 2009 that California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, the four State
Associations consisting of Region IX, formally agreed on the rotation
of the Directorships. It is our own Dawn Abrahamson, who will be
completing her term and stepping down as one of the two Region IX
Directors. Please join me in thanking Dawn for her many years of
selfless service to CCAC, IIMC, and all its members.
CCAC Annual Conference Update:
A few weeks ago, I made the tough decision to cancel the in-person
conference for next April. Instead, I am proposing a modified conference
schedule with six workshops held over three weeks. Most of these
workshops will focus on the technical aspects of our profession, such as
staff report writing, public noticing, and election topics. Many of us
are also taking on new titles and responsibilities in fields not
traditionally associated with municipal clerks. That is why I intend to
include presentations from other organizations such as the National
Association of ADA Coordinators, International City Managers
Association, and the Society for Human Resources Management. It is my
hope that we will all learn about these roles and their associated
certifications so that we may stand prepared for when the opportunity
knocks on our door. And I am committed to ensuring that we offer these
courses at the lowest rate possible.
Education Costs: I
have heard loud and clear that registration fees are a barrier to access
the quality education offered by CCAC. That is why I will be
encouraging the Board to explore outside the box ideas to reduce
registration fees. Based on the survey results and my own observations,
CCAC has been combating increasing registration costs by offering more
scholarships. That is why I am excited to explore this topic with the
Board and returning to the membership with some new solutions.
Clearly, the Board has a lot of work
ahead of us. And I know the all-star team that you all have assembled
will step up to these challenges with fresh ideas, new perspectives, and
a bold approach towards addressing lingering problems and confronting
any new challenges that arise. Thank you for the opportunity to serve
and please call or email me if you have questions, concerns, or ideas
related to CCAC.
